Effective 6 October 2026 · Lua for Android and iOS

The short version. Lua needs your location to know which moon you are looking at. That location is read on your device, used for the calculation on your device, and never sent to me or to anyone else. There is no account, no sign-in, and no server holding anything about you.

Location

Every number Lua shows — the moon phase, moonrise and moonset, the golden and blue hour — depends on where you are standing. Without a location there is nothing to calculate.

So Lua asks your device for your position, and only while the app is open. On iOS this is the when in use permission; Lua does not request background or “always” location, and cannot read your position while it is closed.

Your coordinates are not transmitted. The astronomical calculation runs entirely on your device, in the app itself. Your location is not uploaded, not logged, not shared with a third party, and not attached to crash reports or analytics. It is not converted into a place name, because Lua never looks one up.

You can refuse the permission or withdraw it later in your system settings. Lua will simply have nothing to calculate from.

Information you give me

None. Lua has no accounts, no sign-up, no profile and no contact form. Your settings — how many moons to show, whether animations and sound are on, your notification preferences — are stored on your device and go no further.

Crash reports and usage statistics

When Lua crashes or misbehaves, it reports that through Firebase Crashlytics, and reports anonymous usage statistics through Google Analytics for Firebase. This exists so that I can find and fix faults I cannot reproduce myself.

What those reports contain is technical: the device brand and model, the operating system and its version, free memory and storage, screen orientation, whether the device is rooted or jailbroken, the version of Lua you are running, and where in the code the failure happened.

What they do not contain is your location, and anything that identifies you personally. I do not use this data to build a profile of you, I do not attempt to track you across apps or services, and I do not sell, rent or pass it to anyone.

Children

Lua is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided me with personal information, write to me and I will act on it — though in practice there is nothing held to delete.

Your rights

Where you live may grant you the right to access, correct, export or erase the personal data a service holds about you. You are welcome to exercise those rights with me at any time. In Lua's case the honest answer is that there is nothing to produce or erase, because nothing about you is stored off your device. Deleting the app removes your settings along with it.

This website

This site is static HTML served from my own server. It sets no cookies, runs no analytics and embeds no third-party trackers.

Links to other sites

Lua and this site link outward — to the app stores, to a feedback form, to the people credited on the contributors page. Those services have their own privacy policies, and I have no control over what they do.

Changes

If this policy changes, the revised version is published on this page and the effective date above is updated. Material changes will also be noted in the app's release notes.
